Social security in general


Organization and implementation in the Czech Republic

The organization and implementation of social security in the Czech Republic is regulated by Act No. 582/1991 Coll., on the organization and implementation of social security, as amended.

The social security services are carried out by social security authorities, which are:

  • Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs,

  • Czech Social Security Administration,

  • District Social Security Administrations,

  • Ministry of Defence (with regard to professional soldiers),

  • Ministry of Interior (with regard to the members of the Czech police, Fire Rescue Department of the Czech Republic and members of other armed security forces and security services),

  • Ministry of Justice (with regard to the members of the Prison Service of the Czech Republic),

Information on social security in the Czech Republic is mainly provided by the District Social Security Administrations; in the territory of the Capital City of Prague, by territorial offices of the Prague Social Security Administration and in the territory of the City of Brno, by the Brno Municipal Social Security Administration.

These institutions are competent in the following areas:

  • sickness insurance,

  • pension insurance,

  • social security premiums,

  • social insurance of self-employed persons.

Information regarding:

  • employment and state benefits (unemployment benefits, parental allowance, child allowance, childbirth allowance, death grants, social assistance - assistance in material need, etc.) are provided by the contact points of the regional offices of the Czech Labour Office; addresses and contact details of the offices of the Czech Labour Office can be found at Czech Labour office,

  • health insurance is provided by health insurance companies.

Please note: Personal income taxes are the responsibility of the authorities of the Financial Administration of the Czech Republic, they are not covered by the social security system.
